What is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)?
The concept of community supported agriculture is relatively new in Ontario, and reflects an innovative and resourceful strategy to connect local farmers with local consumers. Consumers buy an annual membership in the CSA, and the farmer provides members with a weekly supply of farm fresh produce. This arrangement provides the farmer with a guaranteed income, and gives the consumer a share in the farm's bounty. CSA is a mutually beneficial relationship in which a farm supports the community's need for fresh, nutritious organic food, and the community support allows the farmer to devote his or her energies to conscientious and sustainable farming practises. Becoming a member creates a responsible relationship between people and the food they eat, the land on which it grows, and the farmers who grow it.
The CSA at Thyme Again Gardens runs for approximately 18 weeks, from mid-June to Thanksgiving. The cost of a membership for 2007 is $450, and approximates $25 of produce weekly. Members can choose from seasonally available produce such as onions, beets, blackberries, carrots, squash, lettuce, cucumbers, raspberries, tomatoes, potatoes, swiss chard, peas, kale, strawberries, tomatillos, mustard greens, rhubarb and asparagus, as well as a wide variety of fresh herbs, and farm fresh eggs. We also have fresh cut flowers, and our own salsa, pickles and preserves. Various cuts of freezer beef, pork and lamb are also available.
